Thank you for your letter of August 24th.  In order to be a student in the
Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, it is necessary to be admitted as
a graduate student in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University.

There are two programs offered, Masters and Ph.D.

Admission to the masters program does not carry with it a presumption of later
admission to the Ph.D. program.  Admission to the masters program can be made
by the admissions committee at any time.  Applications for admission to the
Ph.D. program have a January 15 deadline for admission the following September.
